Emma Olsen started this petition to Hollister Ranch Owners' Association

Hollister Ranch is located on an 8-mile stretch of pristine coastline in Santa Barbara County. The expansive 14,000-acre property is owned by a small coalition of wealthy individuals, the Hollister Ranch Owners' Association (HROA). There is no land-based coastal access to the shoreline. Per California State law, all waters are public beyond the mean tideline, however due to its secluded location and property ownership, "The Ranch" is only publicly accessible by boat or a long, tide-dependent hike from Gaviota State Park.

Landowners argue that restricting public access to this land is the reason why it has remained such a beautiful and special part of the California coast. However, the "environmental stewards" of the Hollister Ranch Owners' Association have engaged in several environmentally degrading practices, such as mass cattle ranching and driving vehicles on the sand. Creating land-based public access to Hollister Ranch will allow all individuals to experience the pristine beauty of this gem of the coast, regardless of wealth and privilege.
