Becky Hull started this petition to York Catholic High School

York Catholic High School, located in York, Pennsylvania, recently forced a student named Dean Holmes to remove his “Black Lives Matter” face mask at his graduation ceremony. There were no rules stating that Dean could not wear a mask with writing or “political” messages on it. He was only instructed to take it off right before taking the stage. This is not the kind of thing that a senior should be having to worry about right before graduating high school. Not only that, but Dean’s health was put in danger during a global pandemic.

Sadly, this was not York Catholic’s first attack on Dean Holmes and his freedom of speech. He was also told that he could not present his speech on equality and what it means to be a person of color in a white-majority school, out of fear that it was “too controversial”. This is the same high school that has allowed students to chant “build the wall” at football games and walk the halls dressed as Donald Trump and secret service men.

While this is York Catholic High School’s first time making national news over a racial incident, it is not an isolated attack. Racism, homophobia, and sexism are all displayed by faculty and students. Many times, they are not held accountable, even after yelling the N word at their black peers. It has not been until recently that alumni are finally coming together to share their stories of bullying, harassment, and assault. Students with health issues are also looked down upon, which I and many others can certainly attest to.

To help change this, the group “Alumni For A Better York Catholic" has been created. What started as a small, predominately alumni-led group, has grown to an organization of over 100 members of the community. Our goal is to help change York Catholic for the better and to ensure that future students don’t go through the same struggles we did. Even though we have all encountered a wide variety of harassment, our first and main priority is to help fix the racism displayed against students of color. To do this, we are going to start by raising money for the nonprofit organization, “See More Good”. This charity focuses on placing mentors in schools to assist POC students along their academic journey. As of now, there is no group for York Catholic minority students to turn to during school hours. There also are only one or two POC staff members in the entire building.

Please sign this petition to hold principal Katie Seufert accountable for the blatant racism displayed against Dean Holmes, who deserves an apology, and please also consider donating to “See More Good” to help other minority students like Dean. With your help, York Catholic can become a much better and safer school environment. Raising awareness is the first step. #BlackLivesMatter.

Thank you,

Becky Hull
