Hold Joe Biden to His Promise to Forgive Student Loans

Hold Joe Biden to His Promise to Forgive Student Loans
Biden, Joe (@joebiden). "Additionally, we should forgive a minimum of $10,000/person of federal student loans, as proposed by Senator Warren and colleagues. Young people and other student debt holders bore the brunt of the last crisis. It shouldn't happen again." 22 March 2020, 7:28 pm. Tweet.
"Joe Biden wrote in a Medium post, 'I propose to forgive all undergraduate tuition-related federal student debt from two- and four-year public colleges and universities for debt-holders earning up to $125,000, with appropriate phase-outs to avoid a cliff. The federal government would pay the monthly payment in lieu of the borrower until the forgivable portion of the loan was paid off. This benefit would also apply to individuals holding federal student loans for tuition from private HBCUs and MSIs.'" 2020 Presidential Candidates on Student Loan Debt. (2020). Americans are no stranger to unkept promises and this couldn't be anymore true then during an election year. For months on end, we are bombarded with TV ads, social media posts, newspaper articles, etc. from the candidates battling for the win. Countless times we hear what each candidate promises to do for us and our country. And as each one of us begin to form opinions of the candidates and ultimately decide who will gain our vote, Election Day arrives. We each feel a glimmer of hope that the candidate we are voting for, will in fact keep the promises he/she made to us, in exchange for our votes.
After the winner is announced, and he or she soon takes office, we come realize that this person is no different than the rest. No promises are kept. Nothing has changed for the better in our neighborhoods and communities like promised. In fact, adding insult to injury, many times the opposite happens and we find ourselves being even more unhappy and stressed than we were to begin with. At this point in time, we sadly shrug our shoulders and say, "Oh well. Better luck next time." And continue on with our busy, overworked, underpaid, lives. As depressing as all of that sounds, we must understand, and remember, that the story doesn't have to end there. The best part in all of this is - we are legally allowed to change all of this!
For many, many years, politicians have banked on the fact that we the people, do not hold them accountable for anything, much less a promise not kept. Unfortunately, most of us have been so conditioned to expect the worst, that we have forgotten what the true purpose of holding an election is for and why we are even wasting our time voting, to begin with. We must remember the reason for all of this. They are OUR employees. Their salary comes from US! They are voted for by us (hired by us) based off of the promises they made to us (time and again), the entire year leading up to Election Day. We as a society, tend to forget this part of the story.
It is so important to remember this in the future as we make our way to the poles. It is so important to start holding ALL politicans accountable by ensuring they follow through with their end of the bargain. We kept ours by giving them our vote. If they do not fulfill their discussed and confirmed job duties (the promises made to us for our vote), then legally and lawfully, we must replace them.
Let's make this petition be the first of it's kind to start changing all of this BS. Let this be the first time of many more to come, that the people unite and ensure that each and every politician voted into office keeps the promises he made, or if unable to do so, then refrain from making the promises to us in the first place.
Throughout Joe Biden's 2020 presidential campaign, he made promises on multiple occasions when asked about student loan forgiveness, that if he were to win the election, he would forgive (a minimum) of $10,000 in student loan debt, per borrower. That promise has yet to be fulfilled. In fact, it hasn't even been addressed since he took office. Furthermore, just recently, Joe Biden actually refused to answer a question about what his plans were on this subject. "On Wednesday, during his first solo press conference of 2022, Biden ignored a question on whether he will fulfill his campaign promise to cancel $10,000 in student debt per borrower, and it had advocates alarmed." Biden campaigned on cancelling and reforming student debt. A year into his presidency, here's where those promises stand. (January 20, 2022). The Insider. Where is the accountability in that? There is none. To date, Biden still has not discussed a plan for any student loan forgiveness to occur, and frankly I find it flat out disrespectful to all Americans. The lack of care and concern on Joe biden's end, is frightening, considering that he is supposed to be the sitting president of the United States. OUR employee.
There are articles online that state that Joe Biden has no authority to forgive student loans. Where were those same articles prior to Election Day, to allow the citizens to make a informed decision on the candidate of their choice? Furthermore, I am thoroughly confused as to why Biden is so hesitant to, (at minimum), propose any plan regarding forgiving some, or all, of student loan debt, yet there seemed to be no hesitancy when he recently proposed the "Build Back Better" plan/act to Congress, which included a dedicated section to illegal immigrants, and that every single illegal immigrant in the United States will be given $450,000 each, upon the passing of this bill. Talk about blatant disrespect for the American citizens, among other things. So now it falls on us to make a move. What are we going to do about this? Do we shrug our shoulders again and say "Oh well. Better luck next time."? Or do we start making a change today for the better, and for the good of ALL people.
As mentioned, this petition has a much deeper meaning than forgiving student loan debt. It provides us with the opportunity to start changing the way it is and making things better for EVERYONE.
