Thousands have taken to the streets to protest George Floyd’s unjust murder and other countless acts of police brutality stemming from systemic, institutional racism. On May 28, Trump called the protestors thugs and posted: “When the looting starts, the shooting starts” -  essentially a direct call for violence [1].

Despite violating community standards, the incendiary post has not been flagged or taken down by Facebook. More alarmingly, Zuckerberg reaffirmed his decision even after several civil rights leaders pointed out to him that keeping the post up would only incite more violence against those peacefully protesting on the streets [2]. We are already seeing a similar situation play out: police are increasingly targeting media personnel, no doubt a result of Trump’s repeated attacks on the media over the past few years [3].

It is important to recognize the dichotomy between Zuckerberg and the protestors: Zuckerberg comes from a position of privilege and isn’t affected by the consequences of his decision, while many of the much more vulnerable protestors are fighting for everyday changes to their lives [4].

Sign this petition to hold Facebook and Zuckerberg accountable for their actions. Most immediately, we demand that facebook take down or flag Trump’s post, as other social media sites have already done, to protect civic safety. For the longer term, it is clear that Facebook’s review process needs greater oversight and transparency via a third-party review body.
