Why this petition matters

Started by Bianca Sanchez

On April 22nd, 2022,  Senate Speaker Rachael M won the Presidential Election as an uncontested candidate. The presidential position requires a candidate that is kind, compassionate, and professional, and actions towards her staff members this year has exemplified the exact opposite qualities. staff members are aware of behavior and the reports against her, but they have opted to not take action, allowing her without penalty or discouragement to harass colleagues and create hostile work environments in the office. After sharing my story, multiple student staff members came to me to share similar concerns and express their hesitation to continue working under. I expressed my discomfort and experience with to the Council of Probity, the Elections Commission, and Human Resources and professional staff to take action by holding accountable and asking them to provide us the President that the student body deserves.

On Monday, April 11th, requested to meet me at the Campus Starbucks to have "a conversation". I was not given any context regarding the conversation, however, when I arrived, I was scolded and accused by of a situation outside of jurisdiction. I was not given any space to explain myself; instead, assumed the absolute worst of me and threatened to press academic charges against me. This kind of banter should not be tolerated especially since was my employer and was speaking to me like this as my employer.

What makes this situation even harder to accept is the fact that it was regarding POC issues. Off the clock and as a student, I noticed one of the new candidates creating their platform on marginalized voices, issues, and concerns and making statements about their involvement in a cultural project I have been working on with a team and felt that their claims were false. It is well within my right as a student to voice my concerns over the matter, especially as a person of color. It’s frustrating to see marginalized communities as a marketing strategy for candidates who have not been involved in helping said community prior to this.  insisted that I "bullied" this candidate out of the campaign, that I made those comments to benefit another candidate, and that I was making look bad as I was on campaigning team at the time. I was given no space to express my intentions or to explain my perspective as a student leader of color on campus. instead utilized the time to corner me in a public setting, which resulted in me feeling extremely uncomfortable in continuing my position within Student senate. I terminated my status within that role immediately because of this incident. At the next public debate,  expressed the importance of empowering POC voices and not silencing them, but actions that morning exemplify an entirely different story.
I do not believe that this behavior is appropriate for and position, and the way treated me and others does not align with the Executive Board’s mission nor does it align with vision. This has led me to start the impeachment process for Presidency position. While I understand that this recommendation is a very serious one, I believe that there are several concerns regarding current and future leadership, considering the interactions that I have brought up.

Students, please help me fight for a better leader for the 2022-23 academic school year. I have been silenced and this issue has been swept under the rug. I am frustrated by the systems of support that were created to help students. I went through all the proper channels, I confided in faculty staff I trusted to help me, and feel as though my experience has been invalidated by the lack of accountability foractions. What does this say about systems of support that are meant to help students? WHY are the proper resources not helping students? It’s my hope that with this impeachment petition,  can also start the conversation about creating better systems of support for students who need help.
