Hofstra Student Teachers started this petition to Hofstra University and

As Hofstra student teachers, we request that our student teaching placements end when Hofstra classes end, which is on or before Tuesday, November 24th. Given the dangers of the pandemic, and the fact there is no minimum or maximum amount of days or hours needed for our student teaching placements, we would feel safest if student teaching ends when Hofstra classes end, so as not to risk our health.

While our other Hofstra classmates are allowed the privilege of staying home and staying safe, we student teachers have to continue student teaching until approximately one month after classes end.

Hofstra classes end, at the earliest, the week of November 16th, and, at the latest, on Tuesday, November 24th. Hofstra student teaching ends on Friday, December 18th. Therefore, our classes end approximately one month before student teaching ends. We are expected to keep student teaching well after classes end, and, even after the semester ends. Why? This year, Hofstra made sure that all classes end before Thanksgiving, in order to prioritize the safety of students and staff. Why are student teachers exempt from precautionary measures?

Why should we risk our health while our Hofstra peers and professors are allowed to stay at home? COVID-19 positivity rates in New York are climbing, and our own university is ending all classes earlier than in prior years, so student teaching should also end earlier than usual. Many of us know people who lost their lives to COVID-19, and we do not feel safe knowing that as student teachers, we are not allowed the safety precautions that our peers and professors are offered.

Please end Hofstra student teaching when Hofstra classes end. Thank you.
