Christopher Clarke started this petition to HM Government and

Re-instatement of a through railway route via Tavistock, Lydford and Okehampton between Plymouth and Exeter would greatly benefit rail travellers and reduce traffic on crowded roads and traffic jams. It would bring enormous economic benefits to people and businesses in those towns which lost rail connection in 1968 and 1972 respectively. With a regular and reliable train service passengers could commute to Exeter, which is very busy especially at peak times, and would be able to change for London, Bristol, Birmingham, anywhere! Track still exists between Plymouth and Bere Alston as part of the Gunnislake branch, and from Meldon via Okehampton to Exeter. There is 15 miles of "missing link" which could and should be relaid. Additional benefit gained would be an alternative to the present main line via Newton Abbot. There are often coastal problems on the route between Teignmouth and Dawlish. During February to April 2014 the line had to be closed and rebuilt because of storms which washed away the trackbed and left track suspended in the air! So reinstatement of this alternative route would enable continuation of rail travel in case of similar problems in the future, and bring benefits to communities on this route.
