Meme: an image, video, piece of text, etc., typically humorous in nature, that is copied and spread rapidly by Internet users, often with slight variations.

Memes are an important form of communication, especially for the younger generations and have, in the past, caused implications for individuals, organizations, and even governments. People often discount memes as a mere source of entertainment provided by popular social media. Still, the sheer virality of memes makes it as powerful as other, more traditional media formats such as newspapers.

We can apply memes as a communication tool in a lot of fields we already study in Minerva. We have seen impacts on important areas such as politics, business, social change, psychology, etc. For eg., Elon Musk smoked pot in a podcast, and an image of him spewing smoke went viral via memes. Soon after, his company, SpaceX, went through a workplace culture and behavior review by NASA along with a review of existing contracts. More often than not, memes have had a positive effect on society. As more and more women enter the meme culture, there has been increasing awareness for the issues faced by women. The credit for increased support for climate change or other environmental initiatives also goes to memes.

This HC would be a perfect addition to the Interpretation, Communication, and Design course. Several scholarly and popular articles have already investigated the relationship between memes and social changes, which ensures a boatload of information to access. Research on this topic would be absolutely effortless for students, and assignments can involve creating original memes via online tools.
