Hispanic Heritage Month to Latinx Heritage Month at ASU

The word Hispanic is now widely considered a colonizer term due to the reasoning behind its creation being to erase indigenous, cultural and nationalistic identities of Latinx communities while at the same time excluding a large part of that community. Latinx is the gender-neutral term for Latino, Latina, and Latin@. Therefore, the name change is necessary because it would be more inclusive for some Caribbean islands and Portuguese speaking countries that don't fall under the Hispanic category to participate in school events.
