"he Dreamed greatly; he dared courageously; he achieved mightily; guided by the hand of God he gave us a new world - America."
This is the inscription at the bottom of the statue, a "monument to torture" which stands facing the Atlantic Ocean, the very one he is infamous for crossing. It's a terrible insult to all those who have been grossly impacted by the cruel and dreadful act of colonization, the legacy of Christopher Columbus; the impacts of which can be traced to many of the issues plaguing our society today.
To honor this man is to continue minimizing the great pain and suffering of Indigenous peoples of the Americas who were subjected to genocide and displaced on their own lands, and the millions of African people who were enslaved and shipped across the Atlantic to the "New World" to be sold as property.
"Transgenerational trauma is trauma transferred from the first - generation of trauma survivors to the second and further generations of the offspring of the survivors via complex post-traumatic stress disorder mechanisms."
In shedding light on the extremely difficult truths that constitute our multilayered roots, we can begin taking the much needed steps towards a path of collective healing.
This petition is not an attack against anyone's heritage but instead is a call to honor the heritage of those Americans who's stories have been largely ignored and their erased.
"Humankind has not woven the web of life. We are but one thread within it. Whatever we do to the web, we do to ourselves. All things are bound together. All things are connected." - Chief Seattle
