We ask that the BOE of District 86 VOTE YES to the tentative contract agreement reached between Victor Casini, Kay Gallo and the HHSTA negotiating team on 10/9/14.

The teachers have made many compromises and concessions in their negotiations with a school board that has behaved in a hostile manner. The current proposal saves the District money in benefits, salary, and retirement and is fair to the teachers as well as the taxpayers in the community.
First, the offer is already fully funded using the district’s financial projections. Second, the teachers’ offer accepts a large number of the board proposals and represents a middle ground compromise between the two offers. Among the proposals the teachers will accept are dramatic reductions in retirement incentives, shifts in healthcare to lower the district’s costs and many of the board’s language proposals. The teachers are also proposing a modified salary schedule that will encourage teachers to seek advanced degrees more quickly and that will also lower the district’s compensation costs.
The salary schedule proposed by the board will put District 86 at a severe disadvantage in attracting the best talent to the district. Please see the following chart to compare the board's salary schedule proposal to that of neighboring districts: http://www.hhsta.org/where-both-sides-stand-compensation/
As you can see, District 86 will be the absolute least desirable high school to want to start a career. And if you are unlucky enough to land here, it will take you 35 years to reach your highest earning potential, while your colleagues can reach that within 18-20 years. Any educator that can't land an offer at the other districts, will reluctantly take a job with District 86 and then count the days until they gain enough experience to leave our district for a far better future. We don't want District 86 to become a revolving door of inexperienced teachers!
I hope that by signing this petition, the school board will recognize the wishes of this community for a fair contract for our teachers. We call on the Board to avoid a strike and sign a contract that will maintain a competitive edge in attracting and retaining top educators to our district.
