Friends of Hillsborough Students and Teachers started this petition to Hillsborough County Public Schools and

We are calling for the removal of Hillsborough County Public Schools Superintendent, Mr. Addison Davis, and Hillsborough County Public Schools Board Chair, Ms. Melissa Snively. In recent weeks, Mr. Davis and Ms. Snively have proven themselves ill-equipped to lead our county’s public schools through the crisis that we currently face.

On June 23, Mr. Davis presented three options to the school board and the Hillsborough residents. During that presentation, Mr. Davis and the school board led the public to believe that all three options would be looked at and a decision would be made based on the “safety and well-being” of our children and the employees of the public schools. Recent comments made during a video published by the Hillsborough County Public Schools have demonstrated that this was not the case. In his July 2 video, Mr. Davis plainly states that “Our intent has always been to bring students back to school full time.” This not only contradicts the statements he made during his 23 June presentation,  but makes it clear that the three options were never really the options. Ms. Snively, during each county Emergency Policy Group meeting has communicated that her interest is not in the safety and well-being of our students, but rather in gathering information that will only support the board's decision regardless of how dangerous their decision is. Further, it is clear, based on the fact that Mr. Davis and the school board’s only intent has been to return to school under Option A, that the decision is being made without regard for the safety and well-being of our children and our teachers. Florida and Hillsborough County continue to have ever increasing numbers of new COVID-19 cases daily. The claim that the younger individuals who contract the virus are more likely to suffer less complications is not a guarantee and it is reckless to base decisions on that un-proven fact.

Under Option A, parents are given the choice on whether they want to send their children to school full time, or keep them home under the e-learning model. However, what that actually does is put parents in a situation where they need to choose between the health and safety of their children and their jobs. Without a mandate by the school board keeping students home for part or all of the school week, parents have very little leverage to compel unwilling employers into giving some level of flexibility. Again, forcing parents to make a very difficult decision. Similarly, teachers who are high risk are given few options to keep themselves safe without risk of losing the jobs they love.

The decision on how to bring our children back to school in August should be based on the health, safety, and well-being of our students and school employees. It is clear that Mr. Davis and the school board are not doing that. It is time for the families of Hillsborough County to have leadership in our public schools that care more about our students and teaching staff.
