In the US, most families own a dog and/or a cat. They are often treated and loved like family members. Recently, in December 2018, a new law, "The dog & cat slaughter law" was passed in the US.  The law reads that "dogs and cats shall not be slaughtered for human consumption and other purposes." This loosely written law is a good start towards the non-food status for our loved pets, however, it does not prevent the pets that die or are euthanized being sold for rendering, which is for use in many dog foods and treats, and fits under the ingredient,  "meat by-products". This little known fact about some dog food ingredients has existed for years and caused countless illness, allergies and suffering for pets and their owners. In the video, "Dead Dogs Don't Lie", a news channel investigates the problem with horrifying reports and footage.  This video is available on Youtube.

In England, animals are classified as "food" or "non food" animals. Dogs and cats are considered "non food" animals and are not allowed to be used for any kind of food.   For many years dog and cat food companies have been purchasing these "meat by products" which include dead and diseased animals, including those not fit for human consumption, and euthanized pets.  Not only does this cause skin irritations and allergies, it often shortens the life of the pet and makes life more difficult for the owners who keep going to veterinarians for relief.  Animal Freedom Rights is a not for profit organization working on awareness and on changing laws to improve the lives of animals.
