Vote to amend the ordinances to allow "Be the Way Home" to be implemented

This petition made change with 2,105 supporters!

On December 18, 2013 the Hillsborough Board of County Commissioners (BOCC) will vote on amending the ordinances needed to allow the healthy cats to be TNVR’d out of Hillsborough County Animal Services (HCAS) instead of euthanizing them, which is what Hillsborough County has been doing up until now. PLEASE JOIN US at the meeting if you can- we'll be giving out signs out front of the building so you can show your support in the meeting.

On May 1, 2013, ACT and Humane Society of Tampa Bay joined by Cat Crusaders, Cat Call, St. Francis Animal Rescue, Animal Based Charities, Save 90, and other animal organizations thought our prayers were answered when the Hillsborough Board of County Commissioners passed "Be the Way Home" as our many "sea of green" supporters witnessed their historic vote.  The comprehensive plan was to begin the process of saving animals by allowing 2,000 cats per year to be spayed, neutered, vaccinated and returned to their original surroundings. Read the plan here.  It wasn't all cats, but it was a start.

Unfortunately, more than 6 months have passed, and NOT ONE CAT's life has been saved under this plan because the Hillsborough Board of County Commissioners has not reviewed or passed the needed language change to the Hillsborough County Ordinance to allow the implementation of the  Be the Way Home plan.

Because the BOCC has not reviewed or passed the needed changes to the local county ordinances, since May 1st, over 5000 cats have been euthanized at HCAS. Nothing has been done to protect the community cats already living in colonies in our community, and nothing has been done to protect the caregivers of these colonies from being ticketed for a problem they did not create, but are trying to help by feeding and managing these colonies.

The organizations are ready, willing, and able to perform the needed vetting of these cats, but they have been repeatedly told no, they can not do anything to save these cats until the Ordinance is changed by the BOCC. We started a petition to get the BOCC to add the ordinance chance onto the agenda, and they have for Dec. 18th- now we need them to actually vote to change the language to allow healthy cats to be TNVR’s out of HCAS.

Please join us in signing this petition and emailing the BOCC at the once central address they asked us to use, CommunityCats@hillsboroughcounty.org to let them know you support TNVR and its time to change the ordinance to implement the plan they passed on May 1st; change the ordinance and allow these cats to be saved. The BOCC passed the plan in May, now they need to keep their word to the voters and implement it.
