I’m 11 years old and I’ve seen on social media lately of a lot of articles about countries flooding and polar bears dying from global warming. So I decided to research a little on the topic, and I found some information that was outrageously unacceptable. Think of every time you’ve taken your car out to drive, how many greenhouse gases you burn that heats up the earth. Because of that, the ice in the poles are melting at an alarming rate, and polar bears no longer have a home. They are now homeless.

Greenhouse gases are made by burning coal, oil, and gas. Although normally it would release into the atmosphere,  nowadays, the tiny microplastics that we let loose are blocking the greenhouse gases from releasing into the atmosphere, so they stay in the earth heating it up more and more, killing over 500 polar bears every year. There are only 25,000 polar bears left in the wild now! Because polar bears need sustainable habitats, it is harder to increase the population, or in other words, to save them from going extinct.

Because the ice is melting, polar bears no longer have long-term homes, but they also have a slimmer chance to hunt. Polar bears hunt seals on ice, but if there is less ice, there are fewer seals to hunt. That means polar bears need to hunt more on land, with a bigger risk of being hunted by the Inuit tribe. Not to mention that the Inuit tribe will not give up its egocentric tradition of hunting polar bears for their warm fur, so polar bears future’s for finding food don’t look very hopeful.

Though Americans make up only 4% of the world’s population, they produce 25% of fossil fuel burned, the largest amount produced by any country. This needs to change. Tell Congress to cut our carbon emissions by at least 80% before 2050 to reduce the number of greenhouse gases heating up the earth.

Although an average Chinese lets out 4.6 tons of CO2 every year, an average American lets out 19.8 tons of CO2 every year! That means that every time you take your car out to drive or use the air conditioning, the greenhouse gases in the earth increase.

This careless and reckless behavior needs to stop. You can help by using more public transport to save gas and burn less oil and coal. Also, if you want to take it a step further, try to make a nonviolent protest, or write a letter to Congress. For starters, please sign my petition to raise awareness for these polar bears. Remember, any action to save the environment will help save the polar bears.

Thank You!
