The project to convert the Winchester - Eastleigh stretch of M3 (between J9-J14) into a so-called 'smart motorway' has not yet been stopped despite the fact that it has now been proved that SMART MOTORWAYS ARE DANGEROUS and any future smart motorway projects are being scrapped.  By essentially removing the emergency hard shoulder, converting it into an additional driving lane,  smart motorways put drivers at greater risk and have already caused an extra 38 deaths in the last five years.

Drivers should not have to simply 'hope they don't break down' on stretches of road with no emergency hard shoulder.  Recent smart motorway deaths have been caused by collisions into stationary, broken down vehicles in the 'old' hard shoulders which are now 'live' lanes.

We live in a cul-de-sac with 38 houses adjacent to this particular stretch of the M3 near junction 9 and we have all witnessed countless sounds of lorry horns and brake-screeching over recent years, at this already dangerous junction, as some drivers get confused at this exit with drastic consequences.

As a mother of two, frequently driving my children around to make the most of all that this fabulous part of the country has to offer I am deeply concerned to think that all three of the access junctions to our home town of Winchester could now potentially put our lives and the lives of all other families at greater risk.

We still have time to protect the safety of drivers on our roads, especially all residents in the Winchester - Eastleigh area, before Highways England start clearance work later this month.  Any expense incurred thus far would be minimal to the cost of loss of human life from future accidents.
