Is the A12 the most dangerous road in Essex?

It has become increasingly evident that the A12 has been severely damaged over recent months resulting in unsafe conditions that have caused/contributed to road traffic accidents occurring almost every day on this stretch of the road, There have been 13 so far in the two weeks between May 5th and May 19th; most of which occurred in the stretch between Chelmsford and Colchester. There are a distinctly worrying number of accidents, especially around Junctions 19, 20 near Chelmsford and Junctions 26, 27 and 28 near Colchester.

Surely this tells you and the Highways England that this road is in need of major improvements in its safety precautions.

The reason I am so impassioned by this cause is because on the 18th May 2017 just before 6pm; I was involved in a road traffic accident between junction 19 and 20 on the southbound A12, an accident that makes me one of the statistics I reported earlier. Due to insufficient drainage of the road I aquaplaned across 3 lanes of traffic before ultimately going up the verge and crashing into a tree. Thanks to this accident I am now terrified of the A12 and of even driving again. My car has been written off and whilst it appears that I had a lucky escape, I have a broken rib and my body is covered in bruises and cuts. I am in more pain than I have ever felt in my life. Not only am I physically injured by this accident but I am mentally and emotionally traumatised by this experience. I don’t even know right now if I can continue with my job as a secondary school teacher which involves me driving the A12 every day between Chelmsford and Colchester.

Every accident on this road has costs, not only to those involved in the accidents; but on those who witness the accidents or are held up by the results of the accident,  the emergency services who respond to these accidents and the people in the lives of accident victims. The continued poor state of the A12 is costing the people.

I am one of the lucky ones; I avoided hitting any other cars, I was alone in the car when the tree hit the passenger side of my car, I was wearing my seat belt and my car; a Ford Fiesta has an excellent safety rating. All of these contributed to saving my life but many others haven’t been as lucky as me, others have suffered life changing injuries and some have died. This is why I demand that this road is reviewed immediately, tested and undergoes significant improvements to ensure the safety of its users.

An immediate, and simple measure, would be to reduce the speed limit to 60 mph. This would allow both experienced and learner drivers to respond to events in a more timely and effective way.

This road needs major repair work doing to it; the road needs to be effectively resurfaced with a material suitable for the number of cars and lorries that use it every day,

The drainage on the road needs improving to stop the flooding of the road.

I do hope that you are as concerned about this cause as I and many other A12 users are. I will be campaigning Highways England to rapidly improve the safety and I hope you can support me with this petition.
