Since 1980's Sandy Road has suffered traffic congestion and air pollution from NO2 and PM 5, pollutants that causes Asthma, Lung Diseases, Cancer and over 40,000 premature deaths in the UK each year. Over the years traffic has been escalated to an alarming degree, in 1997 the then Head of Highways of Carmarthenshire County Council Mr. Robert Sully stated "that the A484 Sandy Road will have reached saturation by the New Millennium (2000) a route was established in the mid 1980's but the Council decided to put house there. Since then the European Health Guidelines of 40ug/m3 have been regularly breached .   .Over the next 17 years we have seen massive housing developments, many heavy vehicle businesses, new Ysgol Gymraif Ffwnres (450 pupils) upgrades to Coleg Sir Gar and Ysgol Gyfun Stradey which have resulted in increased student numbers considerably, all these educational establishment have large catchment areas therefore a vast increase in buses and cars to ferry the pupils/students into them.  We also have a thriving Bus Depot, as well as many garages.   Being the only route west out of and into Llanelli, everything travels on this road, well over a thousand houses in various developments have been built to the east and many such sites of similar sizes to the west.  Pembrey Country Park, Ffos Las Racecourse and Pembrey Airfield and Car Racing Circuit are thriving attractions all of whom are accessed via the A484 Sandy Road.   A 350 housing development at the former Stradey Park is two thirds complete and a new set of traffic lights have made such a disastrous impact that everybody are concerned.  The pollution health safety levels are now regularly over the limit between 45ug/m3 and 60ug/m3, we have yet to see the full impact of a completed housing development and the huge increase in traffic congestion and Ysgol Gymraeg Ffwrnes has not reached capacity.  A by-pass route will relieve the misery of traffic congestion, air pollution, noise pollution and vibration damage that affects the local residents.  The Council claim that the Millennium Commission will claw back all the £30 million grant to establish the Millenium Coastal Park.  A letter from the MC clearly refutes that claim and proves otherwise.  The Sandy Road by-pass is in the region of just over a mile and the costings have been established by a local infrastructure of nation repute out of Pontypridd University as £6 million a mile, this by-pass has to become a reality as the health, safety and welfare of Sandy residents are at high risk, Asthma in Sandy Road is is on an alarming rise.  Please help by supporting our campaign and signing this petition.
