Keep Park Ave Beach open for all public uses!
This petition had 1,010 supporters
Friends of the Park Ave Beach call upon the Park District and City Council to cooperate and continue to provide safe access for all lakefront activities, including power boating, in 2016 and beyond.
Background: In the fall of 2014 the City announced that to improve security it would cut off all access to the Park Ave Beach south of the water plant. After public outcry and your help, they agreed to work towards a compromise so everyone could continue to enjoy our lakefront.
- To accomplish this the Park District appointed a citizen Task Force. After a year of study with input from the public and the Park District, the Task Force concluded the City’s plan severely restricts lakefront/beach access, creates traffic bottlenecks, reduces available parking and ignores the traffic pattern recommended by the engineering consultant.
- Despite the Task Force’s recommendations, beginning this spring, the City will close the road west of the water plant. In response to the City’s decision, the Park District now plans to eliminate all power boating beginning in the Spring of 2016.
We ask you to sign this petition because boaters of all types and a boat launch ramp contribute to water safety, and boating options bring value to living in Highland Park.
