The Isle of Skye is the second most visited destination in Scotland and is renowned worldwide for its beauty. The island has suffered immeasurably from a lack of investment from the Highland Council in planning and infrastructure and is now at breaking point.
Example: Uig pier is planned to receive a 20 million pound upgrade in 2018, financed by Transport Scotland to allow Calmac to operate a larger ferry from the port.
The Highland Council have refused to invest any of their budget towards this contract meaning that all monies contributed by Transport Scotland will be spent on the ferry berth and ticket office.
With increased traffic and passenger numbers and a severe lack of parking and facilities to accommodate this, the community will be left with more congestion, pollution and hardship without any of the benefits usually associated with a growing tourism industry.
There are many stories throughout the island where the Highland Council are implicit in purposely underfunding and diminishing services. The community of Uig has lost its primary school and will likely loose its local hospital in Portree in due course. The Highland Council in Inverness has extracted millions of pounds in ferry pier dues from the area without any of it being reinvested.
It is now proposed that the Isle of Skye be freed from the control of Inverness and managed by the Western Isles Council who understand and share many of the challenges faced by islanders in the 21st century.
