(Written by Andy Tao and Lizzie Starosta) With the recent decision to bring Fargo students back into schools full time, 5 days a week, many students and parents have found themselves worried at what this may entail. The decision has brought varying levels of discomfort, fear, and stress to all families who are a part of the Fargo Public School district. With all of the curveballs this year has thrown at us, it is understandable that many students are having a difficult time learning with the current A and B schedules. Attempting to bring kids back to raise grades is, in theory, an excellent idea due to the additional in-class time spent with teachers. However, it is simply illogical to bring back over a thousand people into one school during a pandemic. With class sizes around 20-30 people which will now be crammed in a room with minimal (if any) social distancing, Covid cases are sure to go up. North Dakota is still the highest in covid cases per capita.  According to the New York Times, North Dakota has seen at least 3 deaths and around 138 new cases on January 12th. In the past week, North Dakota has averaged 211 cases per day. Though the vaccine is being rolled out, there are still so many people left to vaccinate. We cannot brush this virus off simply because a vaccine is available. We cannot allow ourselves to become complacent about this virus. We cannot allow our students to risk their lives just trying to get an education.  There is so much at stake with the decision to put students in school full time. The last thing we would want is a rise in covid cases and in a worst case scenario, the death of one of our beloved students or member of their families. We would like our voices to be heard and to be asked what we would like for our education. Please sign this petition to implore the Covid Committee to please reconsider the 2nd semester schedule in order to protect this district's students and families.
Thank you.
