Vasai faces wet land crisis
There have been several instances where development has taken place at the cost of environment and this too is one of them. The area, in Vasai, comprises of wet land where migratory birds visit. 1560 acre of land which was a no development zone for the past 25 years is now being asked to be developed by MMRDA as a commercial and residential hub. It is a rain water sink which presents monsoon flooding in Vasai-Virar region.
The land was earlier designated as a salt pan. In 1989, the state government leased it to the firm Gogate Salt Chemicals for 25 years for salt production. The local themselves suffer from various shortages and are not looked after. There development should take place first. As for the locals, they are quite enraged with this proposal and are against it. The area has villages, settled hundreds of years ago where a traditional environment-friendly way of life is seen and the historic Vasai Fort is nearby. So, it is very important to save the land from urbanisation to maintain a right ecological balance with nature. Join this voice against it, save the environment and the beautiful birds.
