The proposed petition by DR. TATU KAMAU, which has been filed in court, is a source of huge concern for Kenyans worldwide. It proposes that the PROHIBITION OF FEMALE GENITAL MUTILATION ACT (Act No. 32 of 2011), a law which banned female circumcision, is infringing on women’s human right to perform their culture. Dr. Tatu Kamau is seeking to have the law abolished and female circumcision legalized.

A recent UNICEF study, Female Genital Mutilation/Cutting: A statistical overview and exploration of the dynamics of change, July 2013, available at http://www.unicef.org/media/files/FGCM_Lo_res.pdf provides valuable information on the prevalence of FGM in African countries and it's consequences.

In the study, FGM is defined as partial or total removal of the female external genitalia or other injury to the female genital organs for non-medical reasons.

Decriminalization of FGM will undoubtedly cause an immediate deterioration of the progress that 16 countries in Africa have made in stopping harmful practices against women.

By adding my name to this document, I object the abolishing of the law that protects the female against genital mutilation. I call on the HIGH COURT OF KENYA, to dismiss Dr. Tatu Kamau's petition. Female circumcision is a barbaric culture and should be prohibited in all its forms.
