Chris Simmons started this petition to HICKORY CITY COUNCIL

Dollar stores have been the site of more than 200 gun-involved violent incidents across America since 2017. Fifty of those were fatal.* They also hinder development of healthier, more desirable grocery and retail stores by making it more difficult for them to open and flourish nearby. These stores have their worst impact when opened in residential areas.

The proposed Dollar General on 10th Street Blvd at Geitner Road, is in the middle of a large neighborhood, less than 30 yards from the Old Lenoir Road arts district and Hickory's Citywalk, a $14 million project linking parts of Hickory, stretching from Lenoir Rhyne University, Union Square and Ridgeview to Lake Hickory's Riverwalk. A Dollar General store is a tumor on the spine of these important development projects besides the negative impact it will have on the surrounding residential community.

We recognize that the west side of Hickory is a food desert, but a Dollar General store would offer very limited food options and almost none of them would be healthy.  A number of American cities have banned or restricted dollar stores for these very reasons.* If dollar stores must exist, they must be placed only in commercial areas such as the 127, US 70, 321 or Springs Road corridors not in the middle of large numbers of homes.
