ANDRÉ MOREIRA started this petition to Hermes

Hermes to pay their self-employed drivers properly, to pay holidays and sick-pay and to apologise and compensate for not providing necessary measures implemented by the Government during National Lockdown.

I was a self-employed driver for Hermes for over 3 years delivering parcels on their behalf with my own vehicle, but i had to leave last week due to a few unfair issues:

- Incorrect Payment

I raised a claim with their complaints department back in June (2020) for money that i'm owed since at least June last year, because i realised that i was not getting paid the same delivery rates as before (the rates that had been previously agreed) and so i escalated this to my field manager, but that manager left soon after so nothing was done then, so since then i've spoken with numerous people in charge but no one seems to want to do anything at all and to deal with it accordingly. I have been chasing this for months now and unfortunately as it was causing me too much stress and anxiety due to no one doing anything about it all, i had to leave the position due to this unfairness and due to the fact that i was still delivering for months on end, but still being paid incorrectly, therefore the debt was increasing every day!

- Illegal Insurance Top-Up Cover that invalidates Personal Insurance Cover

Hermes offers a top-up scheme to cover driver's vehicles whilst delivering, that the Police and the Motor Insurance Bureau (MIB) does not accept as it being legal, and that therefore invalidates Personal Insurance Policies. Exactly that happened to me last year after me being stopped by the Police whilst delivering for Hermes, because the Police then contacted the MIB on the spot to check if i was insured for business on my vehicle, but apparently i wasn't as the top-up that i was paying Hermes for, not only was illegal but it also invalidated my personal cover, as no 2 covers can ever be covering 1 vehicle at the same time. Therefore my Business Insurance Cover on my van that was £1500 p/yr for the 1st two years, went up to just over £2800 p/yr (almost double!) due to this incident that was not any of my fault at all.

- Not giving their self-employed drivers their rights, such as the right of paid holiday and the right to receive the National Minimum Wage

I have also realised that after taking all our necessary expenses out to be able to deliver for them, what we are getting paid is actually well below the National Minimum Wage, and no holidays paid at all either. Not only they wouldn't pay for holidays, but they also made it really hard for anyone to take any time-off at all, due to them not having anyone else to cover the rounds.

- Not taking the necessary measures during National Lockdown imposed by the Government, to protect their drivers

Measures for Social Distancing and  were not taken seriously by the company at all, to protect the drivers, and every time that i pointed this out with the depot manager etc, i was made to feel like i was in the wrong and that i shouldn't even say anything at all (i have got photographic evidence of this) . Drivers were being forced to organise their rounds in the depot, with other people within the mandatory 2 meters, as implemented by the Government. Gloves and masks and hand sanitizers were only given to drivers, more than 3 months too late (again i have evidence of this).
