John Cannava started this petition to President, Heritage Hills Metro District Board Heritage Hills Residents

The signatories hereby submit this petition supporting a ban on the use of toxic chemical pesticides, herbicides, and insecticides by the Heritage Hills Metro District, the Heritage Hills HOA and the affiliates of the aforementioned by July 31, 2021.

“People who are living near areas with consistent exposure to pesticides and insecticides experience greatly increased rates of illness and health problems.”  This is the conclusion from a report summarizing 35 peer reviewed medical studies on this topic over the past 30 years. Scientist believe the increased rates of chronic and fatal illness occur when pesticides are applied and then evaporate and linger into surrounding air for days and weeks after application. (July 2019, Texas A&M).

Background:
Glyphosate-based herbicides have attracted much media attention following high-profile legal cases that have highlighted their carcinogenic properties.  However, aside from cancers and acute poisoning risks, additional health impacts from such neurotoxins include chronic and severe neurological conditions like Parkinson’s Disease, endocrine disruption and DNA alteration, still births, autism, birth defects, and learning difficulties in children.

Twice each week in Heritage Hills our entire Parkway (from Lincoln to Yosemite), both playgrounds, swimming pool perimeters, all common grounds, and trails are broadly sprayed with dangerous chemicals. What’s more, children are playing, community members are walking their dogs, and new parents are pushing strollers- all while the applications are taking place.  Such chemicals have no place in our communities and safer and effective alternatives should be used immediately.

Well tested, cost effective and safe alternatives are readily available to our community and are already being used in numerous towns and cities across the United States.  We should no longer be exposed to toxic chemicals when safer alternatives are available.  Our health in this community is at risk and this must end.

Quick Facts:

  • 15 medical conditions were found to occur at higher rates in communities regularly exposed to pesticides due to increased estrogen receptors and disruption to cellular mitochondria, I.e. Breast Cancer, Prostate Cancer, Non-Hodgkin’s Lymphoma (June, 2019 University of California).
  • Pesticides have been found to damage the blood brain barrier and are deified as neurotoxins (6).
  • Pesticides are highly toxic Central Nervous System activators designed to kill and destroy biological processes within living organisms.
  • Chronic, low level exposures are suspected to have negative outcomes on human health.
  • Pesticides have small vapors and droplets, measured in the parts per million that travel quickly through the air (this is the most common form of exposure, known as Pesticide Drift).
  • Exposure can take place days after an application and are stored in our bodily lipids and blood vessels.
  • No level of exposure is considered safe.
  • Dogs whose owners use pesticides are 75% more likely to develop Non-Hodgkin’s Lymphoma.
  • Many people have reduced capacity for metabolizing pesticides due to altered DNA and lower levels of xenobiotic detoxifying enzymes.

We will be sending this petition to the Metro District once complete, along with a detailed letter to request that The Metro District replace toxic chemicals with family safe alternatives that have been proven effective.
