Tyler Jordan started this petition to Governor Henry McMaster

The Personhood Act of South Carolina states that “a human being is a person at fertilization,” and that “the right to life for each born and preborn human being vests at fertilization.” Further, that “the rights guaranteed by Article I, Section 3 of the Constitution of this State, that no person shall be deprived of life without due process of law nor denied the equal protection of the laws, vest at fertilization for each born and preborn human being.”

According to the American Society of Reproductive Medicine, this bill “ignores scientific and medical fact, it threatens the reproductive rights of women, and thwarts the ability of those who suffer from infertility to seek treatment appropriate for their disease.”

Fundamentally, to support the Personhood Act of South Carolina, to make a philosophical claim on women’s bodies and futures is to expose your disregard for the personhood and the essential equality of women. To support the Personhood Act of South Carolina, and any similar measures, is to lay wrongful claim to the bodies and the futures of all 2,654,033 women living in the State of South Carolina, over half the state’s total population. Sign this petition and urge Governor Henry McMaster not to support this measure.

“When the right to abortion is endangered, the fundamental equality of women is threatened. A woman can never be equal if she is denied the basic right to make decisions for herself and her family.” —National Abortion and Reproductive Rights Action League
