Why this petition matters

South Carolina has much to offer when it comes to quality of life. From the shores, lakes as well as great amusement parks.  There are some wonderful retirement communities for the active and healthy population.  South Carolina is also home to the US Army installation at Fort Jackson.  If considering relocating to South Carolina, residents should note that there are annual personal property taxes on all types of vehicles, boats and airplanes.  Automobiles are taxed at 6% of market value, however, according to Sales Tax Rates, cities and/or municipalities can also collect their own rate on top of the state sales tax rate.  This can be a hardship for many due to the lump-sum payments associated with property taxes.  This makes payment more difficult for individuals that own property but are poor and can't afford to meet the payment obligations.  A beware sign should be listed on the Welcome to South Carolina posted sign.  If you move to this state, you will never fully own your car without taxation. In addition to property tax, there is a fuel tax! It is expensive to own a vehicle in this state and public transportation is not reliable! You will be obligated to pay for every vehicle until you die!  You will not be able to retire comfortably in this state because you will constantly be paying property taxes!  Many South Carolina residents are out of work and can't afford food, and may be forced to lose their homes and may not be able to re-register their tags because they can't pay the lump-sum property tax.  Back in 2016 the State of Georgia, under Governor Nathan Deal did away with new or used property tax once they are purchased and titled in 2016.  Many other states have done away with person property taxes on vehicles as well.
