Jacqueline Drescher started this petition to Governor Henry McMaster and

The Charleston County School Board, under the direction of Superintendent Gerrita Postlewait, is working on a project they call Mission Critical.   However, it has turned into Mission Disaster.  Numerous proposals have been rolled out since June 2019, and the ideas keep changing.  Among the proposals:  Elimination of Magnets and Partial Magnets at numerous schools, combining or closing schools instead of improving them,  and making sweeping changes to high performing schools without evidence that it will help schools in need of improvement.  Stop the madness.  Stop the school board from voting on proposals that are still constantly changing.

New proposals were just posted to CCSD website on November 7.  They come on the heels of different proposals rolled out in October.  The latest proposal is slated for discussion at the November 11th Meeting.  It is also expected that these proposals will be voted on one week later, despite the fact that a financial analysis has not been conducted, and the proposals have not been vetted.  While some schools may be in need of improvement, rushing into a vote on latest idea  would not be in the best interests of students in need and would be worse than vetting and implementing a detailed plan that can withstand the test of time and garner the support of the all involved families.

Even the State Legislature has gotten involved.  In a rare move, the entire Charleston County Legislative Delegation wrote a letter to the Board Chairman and Superintendent Postlewait asking the Board of Trustees to delay any official action on the proposed changes.  The November 1st letter states: “We are respectfully requesting that the administration and the Board of Trustees delay any official action on these proposed changes until a complete copy of any proposed changes has been provided to the Delegation members, we have had a chance to meet with you to discuss them, we have had an opportunity to discuss them with concerned parents and taxpayers and until we are able to respond back to you with feedback. “It is signed by 21 members of the South Carolina State House and Senate, from both sides of the aisle.

Parents and teachers across the CCSD school system have spoken out at numerous meetings over the last few months and are presenting a united front.  One thing is clear:  the proposals do not help those who need the most help.  Common sense dictates that schools that are failing should be provided with additional funding and support to meet their needs.  This does not mean all schools should get additional funding.  Equity is not equality.  If one school needs 5 reading coaches and another school needs one, then equity dictates they should have what they need.  Equality, on the other hand, would place three reading coaches in each school.

Schools that are succeeding should be praised and not torn apart.  MISSION DISASTER is failing our students.  We need to slow down and make the right decisions for the children of Charleston County.  Parents and teachers recognize this, The South Carolina State House and Senate recognizes this, and some board members recognize this.

Sign the petition and tell the CCSD School Board to STAND DOWN and SLOW DOWN.
