Don't let them take away a sick child's dream

Hello there!

My name is Meg and I turned 17 a few days ago. I was born with a rare and awful type of a genetic disease called Ehlers Danlos Synrome. As a little girl I was constantly with unexplained injuries that often couldn't be understood. For example when I was 8 I completely shattered my wrist after falling on roller blades. My hand hit the ground backwards with such force that the bones in my wrist completely snapped which is obviously bad, but I should have recovered after six months - to this day I haven't managed to recover from that injury.

That was one of many occurrences, but I didn't know how ill I was until I was 13 years old. I was diagnosed in London after the disease had rendered me wheelchair bound. Since then, I have also been diagnosed with Chiari Malformation, Cranial-Cervical Instability, Postural Orthostatic Tachycardia Syndrome, Left-sided Hemiplegia, Left-sided Hemianesthesia, Left-sided hearing loss, and a stretched spinal cord.

The severity of my disabilities and illnesses have meant that my life is a constant uncertainty and at 17 years old, that's really scary. I've made it longer than anyone ever thought I would, including myself. I've now been bed bound for 1 year and 9 months. I've also suffered from mental illness since I was 6/7 years old. My mental health problems include depression, anxiety, social anxiety, anorexia, post traumatic stress disorder, dissociative personality disorder, delusions, hallucinations, suicidal tendencies, self harm and more. I live my life wondering if I will ever see tomorrow and that has a horrific effect on a person.

Since I was a very young child I have always had a love for animals; I find peace in them and so when the opportunity of a service dog came along, I was so happy. I spent my time earning money to help me afford it. I earned the £6,500 by the age of 16 and put it away safely for the dog (before I began to raise money for my medical care). In June I paid the company my £500 deposit for a golden retriever trained to help with both my physical and psychological needs. I am a dog person and I have been so unbelievably excited to receive this dog.

Today (August 28th) I received an email from the company telling me that due to some threats made by strangers, they are cancelling all dog training right away. In their words,

'We are aware that a service dog in training has been selected for you. If you still wish to receive the service dog in training we can arrange for a pet transport company to collect your service dog from us and deliver it to you. The cost of this transport is approximately £200 and is payable by the client.'

This means I am paying in total £700 on a dog that I was promised would be trained. The golden retriever is a boy called Kai. I named him after a friend of mine because the name has 3 meanings: 'ocean', 'fire' and 'crowned'. All the meanings are strong, powerful and impacting. To this point, the knowledge of a service dog has been one of the only things keeping me alive. I am absolutely heart broken and I need your help.

A company so important should not just surrender to the threats of a few random people. The company should seek legal advisement and continue training these dogs as they are such a crucial part of a disabled or sick childs life. I need this dog, more than anything in the world I need this dog. That money could have been used for my medical fund but I thought of the big picture and decided a service dog would be such a huge benefit long term.

But now I am crushed. I am bed bound, very ill, one working limb and in such deep depression. I need Kai. This petition is to fight to prove that although some people have unknown issues with the company, most people believe that Service Dogs Europe is an amazing organisation, making a difference to the lives of sick children around the world.

I am going to fight this, but I need your help. All it takes is a click of a few buttons and we will be on the way to preserving the excitement of many kids like me. Don't let them do this to us.
