City of Henderson & CCSD: Build Our School

We, the zoned residents for Kesterson, Newton, Twitchell, and Vanderburg Elementary Schools, are calling on the members of our Henderson City Council to support the immediate construction of a new elementary school on the joint-use site behind Reunion Trails Park, and to do so by approving the prototype recommended by CCSD - a plan that will meet both the immediate needs of our community as well as its projected growth.
Our respective school communities are deeply invested in seeing this new elementary school open and begin serving our kids as soon as possible. We have contributed greatly to its vision and done so with good will, collectively managing disruptive year-round scheduling changes, over-crowding in our classrooms, increased teacher:studio ratios, and the resulting expansion and long-term use of portable classrooms. We continue to make these investments having received assurances that our new school will open imminently and that it will be large enough to provide relief to the overcrowding of our schools. And yet, planning remains stalled.
New pleas to reduce the size of CCSD's recommended campus prototype are now being considered disproportionately to the wants and needs of our community, who understand that a smaller school would be negligent. Our new school must alleviate the overcrowding issues and inflated student: teacher ratios presently being managed. CCSD's current prototype factors both our current and projected population increases, has already been drafted, and is ready to go. It is time for the Henderson City Council to support the construction of CCSD's prototype and move forward.
We therefore call on the Henderson City Council to take immediate action, to approve the proposed prototype developed by our own local school district, and to support the construction of a new elementary school at the joint-use location behind Reunion Trails Park. We ask that this project begins with the explicit intent of opening its doors to our families and kids, our teachers and staff, and all the other members of our wonderful community (that every great public school supports) for start of school - Fall, 2019.
