Why this petition matters

Started by Kierstin Smith

There is a crisis with Veterans and accessibility to mental health. Even if there is accessibility, one might not always know how to get help. I would like to try to create a system where veterans can communicate with each other. Where they can share their stories if they would like or give tips on where they went for help. Even if they do not do either of these sometimes just knowing you can be (virtually) in an environment where others know what you have gone through can be a relief. Personally, my grandfather was a Vietnam Vet. He did not get sent overseas but was stationed and had to move over and over. He was a conscientious objector, so they sent him to be a nurse. Being a nurse, he still had PTSD from all of the injuries he saw, and he also was in contact with agent orange. He had the most PTSD though from the thought he was going to be taken away from his family and home at any whim. Even when Desert Storm happened, he basically hid in the house because he thought he was going to be taken back. Growing up with my grandfather, I did not understand any of these things. Unfortunately, I did not understand any of the things he did or went through until after he had passed away, so now I would like to try to help those who still are going through this because I do understand some it now. My next step in life is to become a nurse like my grandfather and work at the VA like he did as well. By supporting this cause, I would like to start a QR code to donate to the local VA hospitals. The reason I would like to start a donation to the VA is so they can have more staff, more training for the veterans, and just an overall better experience there.
