It seems short sighted to just drain this pond!

The CRD and Province has failed monumentally to recognize the value of this freshwater in this era of global climate change, unprecedented drought, on a freshwater impoverished island and in an area that has the highest wildfire risk on Pender Island. The decision to drain is unconscionably short-sighted, simplistic and lazy. It is simply the path of least resistance and is unforgivable.

Fresh water is a precious resource for people as well as wildlife habitat.

We could not dredge 3 ft of sediment off the bottom of a small, artificial inlet to park small fishing/pleasure boats because of an endangered turtle. But you, the authorities, can destroy a small ecosystem instead of upgrading the dam to your own BC standards. Shame on you!

Like all the Gulf Islands, water is a scarce resource on Pender. We need Gardom Pond. We need the dam properly reinforced to ensure it is safe and poses no danger to the properties below it. And we need responsibility for the dam shifted away from a few individuals and onto the CRD

Water is precious and by draining this water, we are potentially placing Pender Island in the same terrible situation as Salt Spring Island, which has NO water!

Draining the pond is short sighted. Please research a better solution that doesn’t waste precious water, habitat and keeps a source for fire suppression.

Insufficient consultation with all stakeholders.
Insufficient research.
As Ken Hancock stated: this is "unfair for the regional government to treat a retired pensioner in a cottage as an equal stakeholder as far as financial liability"

I am under the impression that some draining of the pond would need to be done in order to repair the damn to today’s standards. I really hope that the eventual plan is for CRD to secure the funds to repair /upgrade the damn and mitigate the risk of a failure. I strongly wish that the water being drained be collected into temporary storage tanks in the case of emergency fire needs.
