Why this petition matters

Started by David McDougall

We have gone from 14 Bulk Billing Doctors to 3 Bulk Billing Doctors and because of a recent Department of Health rule, we are not allowed to replace them. Please sign our petition and help us increase our GP's.

Non-Australian trained doctors must work for 10 years in areas that most need them, they are called a ‘Distribution Priority Area’ (DPA) and until recently Kallangur was classified as one of those areas. This allowed us to recruit and retain non-Australian trained doctors to serve our local population.

However, under the new Government classification system, Kallangur and Dakabin have been merged with North Lakes into a single large non-DPA area. (North Lakes has never been a DPA). This means that we can no longer source non-Australian trained doctors to work in Kallangur.

After 10 years of work, doctors are allowed to go and work anywhere they wish. We have now gone from 14 doctors to 5 doctors (and from 14 Bulk Billing Doctors to 3 Bulk Billing Doctors). Most Australian trained GP’s do not want to work in this very low socio-economic area, and we are not allowed to replace them with non-Australian trained GP's.

·       The Family Practice at Kallangur was a vital lifeline for more than 500 patients per day, it is now a 3 week wait to see a doctor.  Our medical centre has more than 56,000 active patients.

·       We have been forced to close our after-hours Minor Trauma Centre (MTC), which was open until late 7 days per week, because of insufficient doctors.

·       Our Minor Trauma Centre, which was the first in Queensland (2013), has treated on average 18,381 patients every year for 10 years, of which an average of only 253 patients needed referring to the Hospital Emergency Departments. We had average waiting time was 25-35 minutes (not 4+ hours), every patient was Bulk Billed.

·       Our Minor Trauma Centre performed greater than 4,000 X-Rays per year, with full on-site plastering, this department will also now close.

PLEASE SIGN OUR PETITION TODAY AND HELP US APPEAL THIS RECENT DECISION.
