Due to the recent COVID-19 Pandemic, the school districts have begun a “digital learning” course which is new to many students and teachers. The teachers now have additional work to put out on top of their normal workload during this online period. This work, along with the stress and anxiety being put on students to complete it, does not provide a healthy working environment for students, teachers or their parents, who are facing stressful and uncertain working situations.

Although many students may transition seamlessly to learning online, there will be an undeniable number of students that will face difficulties in focusing and/or truly understanding class material.

In addition, children are struggling right now to process and adapt to this new transitional and traumatic period. All sense of normalcy has been taken from them, creating a potentially emotional crisis as they face the unknown future. Many studies have already shown that trauma impacts memory, focus and executive function, among many other skills.

As we are looking ahead at further outbreaks, quarantines and shelter-in-place orders, we realize that most schools will not physically reconvene prior to the end of the 2019-2020 school year.

I have started this petition in hopes of getting all K-12 students’ GPAs for the 4th quarter voided and receiving credits (and/or "A" grades) in full for this 2nd semester. We shouldn’t penalize our students for a global issue that is fully out of their control.

Students should not have to worry about their school work in addition to the current state and future of their lives, their family’s health and their own health and well-being. In a situation like this it would make sense that all students pass for the rest of the year. This is the only fair solution.
