Why this petition matters

Started by Clark Johnson

A month ago there was a tragic high speed traffic death at the intersection shown in the photo. I stood by the person as he died.  Please help me prevent more deaths and accidents to residents, motorcycles, bikers, children, you, me, my wife.

Billings City staff, along with Montana Dept of Transportation (MDT), has agreed to implement an official Speed Study for 4+ miles of high speed, high volume, narrow, bumpy, unsafe two-lane road that is no longer just a country road.  But this Speed Study does not guarantee lower speeds.  Officials still very much need the opinions of citizens, so that the "Officials" will conclude that lower speed limits are required.   The battle was won, but the WAR continues.   Please sign this petition.  Comments are very much welcome, because they bring a personal emotion to this unsafe condition.

---------------------

This formerly quiet country road is no longer "country".  It is a heavily traveled, high speed, 4 mile stretch of bumpy, narrow, 2-lane speedway with several neighborhoods (more coming) on both its sides.  Residents are constantly exiting and entering Rimrock/Molt Road to/from the neighborhoods, with real concern about being hit from behind as they turn off, or having problems actually getting out of the neighborhoods. Bicycle riders are often on the mostly non-existent shoulders.

There is heavy 18-wheeler traffic from construction trucks and rock quarry loads from further west.  These diesel trucks are often fast, and are always  loud as truckers engine-brake or accelerate, immediately at the Molt Road and Masters Blvd intersection.

An official analysis of the volume of traffic, the speed, the noise, and the residents' concern for safety was commissioned.  Billings public officials, with county and state officials, will  work with the Montana Department of Transportation (MDT) to undertake this official study.

The West Billings area is a large population, fast-growing, major part of Billings.  Many new homes are continuously being built, and businesses are now being added to support the residents.  Traffic safety concern has increased significantly over the last few years, and will become even more of a concern in the near term as West Billings grows.

We do know about the proposed new roundabout to replace the dangerous intersection of Rimrock Road and 62ndStW, 1800 feet from the intersection where Aaron Lutz died from high speed. That roundabout is indeed needed.  But it does nothing to lessen the unsafe conditions where he died.  Traffic will brake hard to reduce their speed from 55+ mph to the new 15 mph advisory speed limit IN the roundabout, and will also accelerate hard to get back to 55+ mph when leaving the proposed roundabout.  By the time that roundabout traffic reaches the spot where he died, they will be back to full speed and higher.

Please stay the course. Do not stop.  Sign the petition, SHARE the petition link.  Personally, specifically, ask others to sign.   Make comments.
