Help Stop SMART Making San Rafael and 101 Traffic Congestion Worse

This petition had 111 supporters

Think traffic in downtown San Rafael and 101 is bad now? It’s going to get much worse if SMART is extended to Larkspur, blocking 2nd and 3rd streets four times an hour unless there is proper planning and mitigation by the city and county.

Traffic Congestion is Already Officially "Unacceptable"

According to the city’s own standards of service downtown San Rafael traffic congestion is already unacceptable - now they want you to add more time to your trip?

Parking & Loading Buses on City Streets!

The city plans to park buses on city streets! When SMART is extended to Larkspur active tracks pass through the San Rafael Bettini Transit Center - so the entire transit center must be relocated at a cost projected to exceed $29m. For a potentially indefinite period buses will park and load passengers on busy city streets further worsening traffic and endangering the lives of transit users.

Let's be Genuinely Smart and Fight Climate Change

Didn’t we set out to erase smog and reduce greenhouse gas emissions decades ago? Then why are we creating more pollution now by having people sit in even more traffic?

Spare 30 Seconds Now and Save Hundreds of Thousands of People Hours of Wasted Time

Sign the petition now - help fight traffic congestion and global warming. Spare just 30 seconds now and by signing you could be saving yourself and hundreds of thousands of others who use 101 or drive through San Rafael hours sitting in traffic.

What Are We Asking For?

The city of San Rafael shall not approve SMART to be extended to Larkspur until:

(1) The city of San Rafael shall conduct 3 public hearings taking questions and input from residents prior to making any decision to approve SMART to be extended to Larkspur

(2) Firm commitments fully funding a new, permanent location for the Bettini transit center are in place. (otherwise buses may park and load on city streets indefinitely)

(3) The impact upon traffic on both downtown San Rafael intersections and highway 101 is properly evaluated and abated.

(4) The impact of incremental congestion on greenhouse gas emissions is assessed and documented
