Help stop racism in our health system
This petition had 14,185 supporters
Racism is making Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people sick.
Many Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people are being treated in a racially discriminatory way in the health system and avoid seeking health care because they have been treated unfairly.
Racism in the health system is impacting on the health and wellbeing of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people, with 1 in 3 reporting experiences of racism in health settings in Victoria. Similar experiences are being reported around the country.
First Peoples are more likely to experience cardio-vascular disease, diabetes and kidney disease and are not getting the treatment they so desperately need. An Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander person will on average die 10 - 11 years earlier than other Australians.
We must end racism in the very health system that is meant to keep us all well.
Racism will continue unless we can shine a light on it and act to prevent it. The Close the Gap Campaign has called loudly and clearly for an inquiry into racism in our health system. Help us make this happen so we can call racism out in our health system and break down barriers that prevent Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people getting equality of access to essential health services.
It is not fair that our First Peoples avoid accessing the health services they so desperately need because of racism.
