The best movies have the most memorable endings. The story of the one-of-a-kind Hollywood Theatre, built in 1935, getting gutted and becoming a fitness centre is not a happy ending. However, it is not inevitable nor is it fitting for one of our last iconic theatres left standing in Vancouver.
Help save the Hollywood and give it the new beginning it deserves by asking that the City of Vancouver place a 90 day moratorium on any development permits to demolish or renovate the Hollywood.
This will give time to all parties (the owner, the city, the West Broadway BIA and community members) to come up with a plan to keep the Hollywood as a beautiful, well-maintained and welcoming space open for all, supportive of the arts and culture that helps maintaining in Kitsilano a diverse neighborhood.
In the changing landscape of this city, we can still rewrite the story. We reject this potential ending meant purely for profit interests and non-local multinational business that will ruin the increasingly fragile culture and community of Kitsilano.
We have plenty of fitness centres but there's only one Hollywood Theatre. Together we can change its horrible ending into a new happy beginning, viable and good for everyone in our community. Let's press the pause button together and save the Hollywood. Please sign the petition.
