Melissa Lucio, a Latino mother of 14, has been waiting on the Texas death row for over 14 years, convicted for a crime that was never committed. 

If we do nothing, she’ll be executed on April 27th.

The case against her? In 2007, her two-year old child Mariah fell down a flight of stairs and died. Police suspected Lucio and questioned her relentlessly for 7 hours.

Yes, coerced. 

Recordings show Lucio was put through hours of repeated questioning. Though she kept asserting she was not responsible, she finally gave in, admitting to spanking her daughter.

However, there has been no testimony of Lucio ever striking her child. In addition, later evidence suggested that her lawyer had refused to dig deeper into several promising lines of evidence for the trial. All of these suggested racial bias and an unfair ruling.

Lucio’s family has been ripped apart as a result of this event, and now many of her family members and those in the know continue to fight for her death sentence to be overturned. 

Every day this problem isn’t solved, spells despair and dwindling hope, and eventually,  without enough support, their movement will fall by the wayside and Melissa Lucio will be dead.
