For the past seven years, Leland & Gray has benefited from the services of a school social worker, Susan Gunther-Mohr, who is a highly trained and licensed therapist and much beloved by students. Her services support 20%+ of students, both in groups and on an individual basis, and she is an essential resource and collaborator for teachers. Unfortunately, Leland & Gray principal Bob Thibault is putting forward a budget that eliminates the school social worker and effectively replaces it with a school counselor position; this is not a budgetary savings but a reorganization.
At several board meetings, community members have protested this shortsighted budget proposal and pointed out the harm and risks in eliminating the school social worker position, particularly in these stressful times, when depression among teens is increasing four times faster than in the rest of the population, suicide attempts and self-harm among girls 10-14 are increasing four-fold, and the opiate epidemic takes a tragic toll on our local community. The board has yet to vote on Thibault's proposal, but seems slightly inclined to support him--unless they hear from more members of the community. We strongly believe that if we let the board know that enough people care about this issue, the board will vote with the kids' best interests in mind. Please let the board know that you/we as a community truly value giving our kids mental health support.
You can help in two ways. 1) Please sign this petition and pass it along to anyone who lives in a town that sends kids to Leland & Gray 2) Also come to the board meeting on December 19th @ 7 pm in the Leland & Gray school library. Showing up is especially helpful as your presence is even louder than your e-signature. Even if you are undecided on the issue, you can learn more about it at the meeting and have your opinion heard.
If you'd like more detailed information including facts and the reasoning why it is important to maintain the school social worker position (now slightly more than 1/2 time at Leland & Gray) email former Leland & Gray board member Margaret Wimberger at margwimberger@gmail and ask for her letter on the position or email me: email@example.com.
Also, please spread the word; post on Facebook and email friends who live in the area; this is important; thanks!!
