Why this petition matters

Started by Maxwell Coppola

The American prison system is corrupt. American prisoners are being used to turn a profit for the companies involved with prisons. Inmates are forced to do slave work for as low as 14 cents an hour, to $2 an hour. While many prisoners have done awful things, none of them deserve to be treated as below human. Businesses involved with prisons are paid based on how many inmates there are, so there is a great incentive for these companies to have a lot of people imprisoned. Our prison systems are based on profits, not rehabilitation, this makes our community a more dangerous place because there is no one out there helping prisoners change. This leads to the US having the highest recidivism rate of all countries. In order to change this, we need a more humane prison. Norway has already had humane prisons for a long time, and North Dakota has recently reformed theirs. I believe we need to do the same thing. The main things that humane prisons bring to the table are new architecture, kinder employee behavior, and generally better living conditions for the inmates. In order actually change the prisons in Massachusetts, we need to get the attention of the Massachusetts government, and get them to see this petition. You can do your part by signing this petition.
