America's Top Climate Scientist Jailed in West Virginia :)
On Tuesday Dr. James Hansen, America's top climate scientist, was jailed in West Virginia because of his views about the urgency of addressing global warming, standing up to the coal industry and ending mountaintop removal mining.
I should probably tell you up front that it was my fault he was arrested.
I asked Dr. Hansen to join me--along with coalfield resident and Goldman Prize winner, Judy Bonds, actress Daryl Hannah, and more than two dozen Appalachian residents and allies--in an act of civil disobedience to protest mountaintop removal coal mining. We took our protest to Massey Energy, a leading mountaintop removal coal company, in Coal River Valley, West Virginia to confront the repugnant, toxic, and irreversibly destructive mining practice.
We got arrested to call for an end to mountaintop removal coal mining. Coal is the single biggest cause of global warming, and mountaintop removal, which is devastating streams, mountains, forests and communities, is the first essential chink in coal's armor.
Now I want to ask you to join me. But I don't need you to go to jail, yet.
I know you want to make a difference and the most important step you can take right now to help save our climate is to ask your friends to join us in building the biggest network of people possible that is powerfully committed to helping end mountaintop removal this year.
As an important step towards moving beyond coal--which we must do to avert the worst effects of climate change--we need to stop the devastating practice of mountaintop removal as quickly as possible.
Over the next several weeks and months, RAN is planning to take on mountaintop removal like never before, but everything we're planning depends on you helping us to get as many people as possible involved and committed now.
