The Prevention of Farm Animal Cruelty Act, H.R. 4733, declares, "It is the policy of the United States that the raising of livestock for food production shall be consistent with the basic principles of animal welfare."
Stating the federal government can lead by example, the bill would prohibit a federal agency from purchasing any food product from pigs, calves raised for veal and egg laying hens, that have not been "provided adequate space to...stand up, lie down, and turn around freely; and ...fully extend all limbs."
This bill would eliminate the worst of factory farming practices - gestation crates for pregnant pigs, tie stalls or confined enclosures for calves raised for veal, and battery cages for egg laying hens.
