For patients relying on life-saving medication, this is the most important thing you can do.

Pharmaceutical manufacturers, insurance companies, and pharmacy benefit managers negotiate pricing agreements on the medicines that matter most. But, what’s behind their pricing decisions? Patients like you spend billions on their medication, and deserve to know why it costs what it does.

The current business model makes it difficult to know if drug intermediaries are putting profits ahead of patient care. But, increasing drug price transparency would help give patients the full story. Here are three things Congress can do:

1. Ensure that pharmaceutical companies disclose all costs that contribute to a medication’s price.

2. Demand health insurers increase transparency about formularies, prescription drug tiering and cost-sharing requirements.

3. Require pharmacy benefit managers to disclose formulary information to patients and physicians.

Prescriptions aren’t like other products on the market. Like food and water, they can mean life or death. You have the right to know how drug intermediaries negotiate the prices of medication to better understand the cost behind the prescriptions you rely on.

Stand up for patients – tell Congress to make prescription drug pricing transparent.
