My employers at small independent restaurants and live music venues have random and unpredictable attendance and the money we get paid is inconsistent and not guaranteed. In order for said employers to stay in business, their sliding pay scales must be flexible and adjustable free from accounting and paperwork so we the performers can have immediate access to our pay for taking care of our families. The little bit of tax money and other deductions for social programs will only slow the process and become financially cumbersome for the little guy. AB5 has good intentions but it doesn’t work for us.
If this becomes a law nationwide, this would completely shut down my business. We're just hanging on right now with Covid, but this will be the nail in the coffin. I provide gig work to appx 300 entertainers per year, paying out on average 850K to these gig workers. Everyone loves working for us. We pay the night of each gig and pay rates are high. This is an AWFUL idea.
We battle things like this in NEW ORLEANS all the time. Its such a huge part of our culture and our TOURISM **cough$$$cough** industry. Its crazy.... once one state starts this I am sure more will follow!
