Why this petition matters

Started by Eileen Garcia

I have been feeding feral cats in the woods of a town owned field for over a year.  I've followed the town's guidelines for ferals by trapping them, having them spayed & vaccinated.  I've trapped kittens and brought them to foster homes to be adopted out. I placed small shelters in the woods for them for the winter months.  I've done everything to contain these cats and keep them from reproducing.  A couple of months ago someone decided to tear up the shelters. I put them back together and replaced them but unfortunately the cats were spooked and wouldn't return to the shelter. But they showed up most days at the feeding spot at feeding time. Last month my shelters were stolen along with my feeding bowls.  Neighbors complained that the cats were going into their yards and urinating & deficating.  I explained that there is a spray to keep them out of his yard be he was unreceptive. I explained to him that if I didn't contain and feed these cats that the problem would get worse.  Apparently there was a complaint made to the Town of Haverstraw and the town attorney sent me a letter to cease and desist feeding them immediately. I was never called and asked about what I was doing.  Now I'm worried about the well being of these cats and potentially any kittens that may be born due to no trapping and spaying. I have been doing what I believe is the towns responsibility by trapping and spaying these cats.  I've been feeding them out if my own pocket. I don't think they don't understand the consequences of my discontinuing feeding and spaying these cats.

I am asking the community to please sign this petition so that our local lawmakers are aware of the ongoing issue with feral cats. We need an Animal Control Officer to make sure that people that are feeding ferals are doing the right thing by using the TNVR.  Also the people that are doing the right thing and the cats they are feeding aren't harassed by people in the neighborhood.
