FabLittleBag started this petition to women and work all party parliamentary group and

Being ‘caught short’ at work is stressful and awkward, we want to legislate that employers provide on-site access to period products at work in case of emergency. Simple.

Periods are a natural part of most women's lives, but they are not always predictable: women can be caught short. When this happens at the workplace, it can be fraught with issues. A survey by FabLittleBag of 500 women, 48% said they had had to either ask a colleague for a spare, or, leave the office to go and buy period products. We also acknowledge that there are also circumstances where men menstruate, and they are included in this campaign.

Employers should be duty bound to cater for those occasional moments when emergency period products are needed, just as they provide toilet paper and first aid supplies as standard.

This campaign is to legislate that employers keep an emergency supply of sanitary products in the workplace for employees' use. In this way, when periods arrive unexpectedly it can be addressed immediately, hygienically, with ease and dignity. We strongly hope that employers go a step further and provide period products as standard in all the work toilets, just as they provide for other bodily functions.

Whilst periods are nothing to be ashamed of, most of us appreciate privacy for toilet matters. At FabLittleBag we have heard many accounts of women's difficulties managing their periods in the workplace and it is clear that change in this area is long overdue.

A Bloody Mess conducted a pilot survey which found that over 70%of participants have experienced toilets with ‘inadequate facilities’ when on their period, no provision of period products, empty vending machines, overflowing sanitary bins, or no bins at all. Our research at FabLittleBag tells us that 52%of women have had to do the “Handbag Smuggle” and over a third have had “nightmare disposal experiences”.

Without sanitary products to hand, it negatively impacts the employer too. Productivity halts as one has to leave the workplace to purchase them, or, ask around colleagues for spares. For some workplaces in remote or male-dominated environments, this can become especially challenging. For those who have heavy periods, the problem can escalate quickly, requiring a change to clothing and yet more disruption and awkwardness.

The cost to the employer is negligible and they increase productivity time with employees not having to leave the office to buy products. It makes sense for all and is simply about addressing practicality and equality in the workplace.

Let's not pretend that periods don't exist and ensure that workplaces cater properly and inclusively for basic hygiene needs. Please share this petition to bring about this important change to employment law; Employers to provide and maintain a “caught short” supply of period products on site.
