Aaron Davis started this petition to Superintendents, lawmakers, and the President
  • When I was in k-12th grade the environment was absolutely toxic for LGBTQ+ students. When I came out my junior year of high school, it got so much worse than I could have expected. I was harassed not only by students but from teachers as well. Members of my family in the school system were harassed too. Within 6 months I went from a 4.0 student to a drop out with severe mental health and substance abuse issues. I had no idea who I could turn to for help. I eventually found a supportive teacher, but it took a lot of trial and error to find that support.
  • I’m sure things are better now for students, but safe spaces are still needed for these student in all our schools. In 2019, 92% of students reported hearing negative comments about LGBTQ+ people in grades k-12. 26% of of LGBTQ+ people are committing suicide, compared to 6% of straight people.
  • A safe space is basically a classroom or office where LGBTQ+ students can be themselves and access resources vital to their well being. The teachers or counselors will be educated on the issues the students face, as well as provide resources. These safe spaces will use a safe space kit from GLSEN, an organization that helps LGBTQ+ students in Ohio. Classrooms and offices that are deemed safe spaces will be properly labeled.
  • I will also be recommending other strategies from GLSEN as a comprehensive plan for change, including LGBTQ+ education opportunities for students. All these changes will not only help any LGBTQ+ students, but will also help any straight students that are perceived as being LGBTQ+.
  • Please sign my petition and share with friends so I can present it at the next local school board meeting, and potentially our lawmakers and president. I don’t want anyone else to have to go through what I did in school, so I am making it my mission to help others in similar situations. 5k signatures gets an audience with senators and house members, 100k gets us to the White House!
