DANIEL TUSTIN started this petition to President of Pittsburg State University Steve Scott

Pittsburg State University is a predominantly female college with over half of the student population identifying as female. Due to the lack of available lighting in a few key areas, this portion of the student population is inadvertently being restricted from traveling across or through parts of the campus due to a fear of safety and security. According to the FBI crime data explorer, all of the violent crimes victims reported by Pittsburg State University between 2016-2020 were identified as female.  With the research I've done on the topic, I believe the addition of more lights on campus will lead to a greater sense of safety and inclusion among the female population, and, in general, the entirety of the student population.

Currently, the most troubling areas that I've noticed and had personal experience with include Gorilla Village, located east of the stadium, and a secondary parking lot located north of Horace Mann. Both of these sites suffer from an extreme lack of lighting and it's very understandable that some would refrain from venturing into these areas after dark. A New York study found that allocating street lights to a specific area "led to a 36% reduction in nighttime outdoor index crime."

Implementing these lights on campus is a concrete move in the right direction to ensure that our classmates, friends, and families can feel safe while traveling across campus after dark. Signing this petition will show Dr. Scott and his successor that this is an issue that matters to the student population at Pittsburg State University and that it's an issue that needs to be addressed.
